Diagram 1 – 1v1 Drill

ORGANISATION:

Set up as shown in the diagram.

The group that starts beside the goal have a ball each.
INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. The first white starts by dribbling through the gate as shown. At the same time the first red sprints through his gate.
  2. White attacks the goal and tries to score. Red defends.
  3. When the ball goes dead the next players start.
  4. Red joins the attacking side, white joins the defending one.
SCORING:
When a goal is scored.  Team with the most goals after 4 mins of continuous play.
KEY COACHING POINTS:
  1. You can work on attacking or defending.
  2. ATTACKING: Be positive, take people on, hit the target, good shooting technique, follow in shots off the goalkeeper, place or power?
  3. DEFENDING: Get there quick then slow down, force play one way, block the shot, tackle with front foot when necessary, communicate with goalkeeper, follow shots in.

PROGRESSIONS:
  1. Change the side of the goal the attacking player starts from so that he is attacking onto his non-preferred foot.
  2. Insist that the attacker takes on the defender 1v1 before shooting.

VARIATIONS:
  1. Decrease the length the defender has to run if the attacker is getting a shot in too easily.
  2. Decrease the length the attacker has to run if the defender is coming out on top continuously.
NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS:

Although it is a line drill, try to avoid too much standing around and waiting. A line of 3 is enough and means there is lots of repetition. If it is a bigger group, run a second drill at the same time.
