Mark out an area 25x12 yrds. The size of this area can be varied depending on the age and ability of the players. Split group into 2 teams and distribute players as shown above. The middle cones indicate a line across the middle of the playing area which the players are attempting to dribble over in order to pass the ball to one of the two players waiting at the opposite end. If more than 8 players, distribute them equally behind each line.
INSTRUCTIONS:
A1 starts with the ball and runs (dribbles) with it and attempts to get past the center line indicated by the 2 cones. If he/she manages to get past this line they can then pass the ball into either of the 2 end players. Refer to scoring. Once the ball has been passed into an end player that end play then dribbles out with the ball. The play who the ball was not passed to gives chase and attempts to prevent points being scored in the other direction. The game continues in both directions adding points to the teams total. If the ball is kicked out of play, the ball is rewarded to the colour that did not kick it out and the game restarts from the end it was kicked out from.
SCORING:
Every time a player dribbles over the line and passes it diagonally to their own colour team, that team receives 2 points. If they decide to pass to the other colour team they get 1 point. The idea being it is generally harder to get infront of the defender chasing and play the diagonal pass. The first team to 21 points wins. You can alter the target score if needed.
KEY COACHING POINTS:
Good first touch and dribbling technique.
Highlight the difference between running with the ball and dribbling.
Quick transition.
Feint moves and stop start moves should be encouraged.
Decisions on when to play diagonal and when not to.
PROGRESSIONS:
Dribbling with one foot only (left or right).
Require a feint move and get over the center line before a point can be scored.
VARIATIONS:
Can be expand to 2vs2 with a larger area.
NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS:
Players tend to be greedy and always go for the 2 points when often they can easily pick up just 1. Keep the pace of the game high and encourage quick restarts. A coach usually needs to monitor this practice to make sure the scoring is correct and the balls kciked out are rewarded to the correct team. Also, many times the players pass from behind the line.
