| Objectives: | - Passing, possession and control in tight areas.
- Attacking combinations.
- Transition from attacking to defending.
| - Drill No: PA1
- Age: 12-Adult
- No Players: 8+
- Difficulty: Medium
- Area/Time: 30x30yrds (30mins)
| | Diagram 1 | | | ORGANISATION: | | Using a 30x30yrd area, mark out the cones and poles (flags) as shown above. The end-zone sections are 5yrds wide and the main centre section is 20x20yrd. The players need to be split into 2 equal teams. | | INSTRUCTIONS: | This drill is 2vs2 in the centre section. There should never be more than 4 players in the centre section. The players in the middle attempt to get the balls to the end-zones with their players in them. The end-zone plays can move anywhere they want in the end-zones. Once a ball is passed into them (1) they must switch with the player which just passed the ball to them (2). For example: - A1 and A3 work to get the ball down to A2. We will assume that they received the ball from their other end zone. A1 passes the ball into A2, this counts as a point.
- A1 then replaces A2 in the end-zone.
- A2 then dribbles out into the center section and combines with A3 to attempt to get the ball to the top end-zone with A4 in it where they would get a point.
The players can pass back to the same end-zone if it helps them keep possession, but they do not gain a point. If the ball is played out by a team at any point or not controlled in the end-zone, possession is given to the other team. IF a team has more than 3 players in the centre section for more than 5 seconds the ball is also awarded to the other team. | | START POSITION(S): | Ball is played randomly passed into the middle of the playing area by the coach. | | SCORING: | | When the team in possession get the ball all the way from one end-zone to the other they earn 1 point. If the ball is intercepted by the defending team and played to one of their zones it does not count as a point. They have merely gained possession. Once they play the ball from one end-zone to their other end-zone they earn a point. Players cannot passes directly from one end-zone to the other. The ball must be touched in the centre section. The first team to score 10 points is the winner. | | | | KEY COACHING POINTS: | - Transition - Quick transition from offense to defense.
- Communication and Organization.
- Cover and Support if defending in the middle.
- Quick combinations from the attacking 2 in the middle.
- Good positive first touch out of the end-zone area when receiving a pass.
- Take players on.
| | | | PROGRESSIONS: | - Demand a combination (1-2, overlap, takeover) before a point can be scored.
- Ball must be chipped into the end-zone (aerial pass).
| | VARIATIONS: | - This drill can be increased in size and played with 3vs3 in the centre section.
- The end-zone players can also be increased to 2 players in each end-zone.
- Increase the area of play to create more space for the attackers.
| | NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS: | | This should be a very high pace drill, with lots of transitions and quick combinations. Players should be encouraged to take players on and attempt attacking combinations. Scoring needs to be monitored. Football training sessions on possession are the basis of many other soccer drills and concepts. |
