AREA/PITCH:12X12rds (10m)
PLAYERS:5/6
TIME:20min
EQUIPMENT:4 cones

OBJECTIVE:
  • To Improve short passing technique and the timing and accuracy of passing in small groups.
  • Understand supporting angles in small groups.
  • Understand pass and move.

DESCRIPTION:

Groups of 5 - 6 players (6 with one defender resting). The 4 players on the outside aim to keep possession of the ball. These players play along imaginary lines between the cones, one on each side of the grid. 1 defender (shown above in red) inside the grid who attempts to intercept the ball. Once he has intercepted the ball twice he switches with the resting defender, or if playing with 5 he switches with the player who touched the ball before he/she intercepted it. The defending player wears a pinnie or holds one in their hand (allowing quick rotations).

SCORING:
The players in the outside attempt to make 10 consequtive passes to gain a point.

KEY COACHING POINTS:
  1. Spread out to create space, work up and down the lines to create supporting angles.
  2. Receive the ball in an open body position, ball on the back foot.
  3. Observe the defenders position.
  4. Timing of the pass, when to play quick and when to play slow (One or Two touch).
  5. Weight of the pass.

VARIATIONS:

Progress on to play with a second defender (4vs2). A pass that splits the teo defenders is now worth 2 passes.

NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS:
Check to make sure that the players supporting the ball by coming down the lines and do not stand behind the defender. Watch for players not moving after they pass the ball. The player on the ball needs to see if the defender pressures the ball or drops off. This will determine whether the player on the ball plays early or not. When possible encourage soft controlled passes that are easy to control and also give the opportunity for one touch passes.
