Short-Short-Long PDF E-mail
Thursday, 26 June 2008 04:28
AREA/PITCH:20-25yrds
PLAYERS:4+
TIME:10min
EQUIPMENT:2 cones/group

OBJECTIVES:
  • To Improve short passing technique and long passing technique.
  • Understand the concept of short-short-long.
  • Understand pass and move.

DESCRIPTION:

We can use this drill to practice both passing technique and also the concept of short-short-long.  That is once a team has played a couple of passes in one area of the field, it time to move the ball to another area of the field with a longer pass.  The reason for this is as the ball is played short distances a number of time the defending team is able to close down the attacking team and compact the play and increase their chances of winning the ball.

The first pass is a long ball.  The player making the pass follows it and receives a two touch (to start) pass back from player 2.  Player 1 then returns the pass back to player 2 who repeats the sequence in the opposite direction towards the third player.

SCORING:
None.

KEY COACHING POINTS:
  1. Follow the sequence.
  2. Try and keep the pace of play (ball speed) high.
  3. Weight of pass, longer ball should be struck harder.
  4. Pass and move immediately.

VARIATIONS:

Progress on to perform the drill 1 touch when the players are confident.  Also the cones can be moved back to increase difficulty.  The option to introduce aerial driven passes on the long pass is also an option.

NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS:
Check to make sure that the players use the correct technique when passing the ball.  Keep the passing sequence at as high a speed as possible.  Discuss the concept of short-short-long with the players and why it is important for teams to maintain possession.
