The restart positions can be varied. The coach works with the attacking team to identify the key points of providing switching play through various players and methods.
Mishit shot through to the GK to begin the game.
GK distributes to A1 using their feet or hands quickly.
A1 switches play through a full field switch (i.e. one long aerial pass) to A3 who moves to an advance wide position.
(Diagram 2) A1 plays a pass into a checking midfield player.
Pass square to A3 in advanced position.
(Diagram 3) A1 drops a ball to A2 and the attacking team plays around the back.
A2 passes to A3.
(Diagram 4) A1 passes into the forward (possibly checking into the seam area).
Pass out to the switch target A3.
At the starting position the defenders can to be inside the centre circle or behind the half way line to begin the drill to allow more time for play to develop in the way intended. Once A1 receives the ball the defenders are free to press the ball (this can be modified to begin defending on A3's first touch to make even easier.
SCORING:
2 teams compete and attempt to score in the oppositions goal.
KEY COACHING POINTS:
4 ways to switch play!
Where are the spaces we can exploit? (channels to go forward).
Ability to recognize space on the other side of the field.
A1's first touch should be out their feet to get their head up to access their options.
Assess your passing options! Furthest pass forward the player can make is the best. Thought process should go from near to far. Dont have to switch play immediately if there is a good forward passing option.
Quick ball movement!
Limited touches when switching play.
Support to the target player switched to.
Diagrams below 2,3,4 - Switching Play through Midfield, Defenders and Forwards.
PROGRESSIONS:
Perform on both side of the field (switch sides).
VARIATIONS
Zone the field off laterally into 3 lateral sections and require the attacking team to have had possession of the ball in all 3 sections before they can score.
NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS:
Switch on to spread and attack. Dont force the switch! Be Patient. Players need to play with their heads up to see the field and switch targets.
