Diagram 1
ORGANISATION:
Using a 60x40/50yrd field with full size goals, mark out 2 lines 25yrds from each goal (Offside Lines). The center section of the field will be approximately 20yrds. Use flags or poles to mark out the offside lines on the side of the field and disk cones to mark these lines across the field. Split the group into 2 teams (preferably 8vs8, which includes the goal keepers). This game could be played 7vs7 or 9vs9 also. If available have 2 assistant coaches stationed on opposite sides of the pitch to monitor the offsides. They can hold a pinnie which they can raise if there is an offside.
INSTRUCTIONS:
2 teams compete normally with the condition that a team can only be offside behind the 25yrd line in the attacking half of the field. Throwns, corners, free-kicks are all as they would be in a real match.
SCORING:
Score in the regular goals.
Diagram 2 (2D View) - Defenders making use of the offside trap.
KEY COACHING POINTS:
Encourage players to get up and down the field and transition quickly.
Encourage them to interchange positions and discuss the 'total football' concept.
Use the width in this game to create opportunity to score.
Defenders can push out to the 25yrd line safely. This not only forces the opposing teams attackers further from their goal, but also gets the defenders involved in the attack.
Goalkeepers can come of their line and start to cover the space behind the defenders.
Possibilty of through balls now the defenders are playing higher.
PROGRESSIONS:
None.
VARIATIONS:
Play with a feeder (floater) who plays with the attacking team always. This will help create more possession for the attacking team.
NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS:
This game creates realistic game like situation with a realistic number of players. Most teams train with 14-18 players in a squad and so this is ideal. Because of the reduced distance of the field players can be both involved in the attacking and defensive phases easily. This activity accurately simulates many decision making scenarios of a real game.
