Passing Detail

Passing is without doubt the most important skill in the game. Without passing attacking becomes nearly impossible. “Pass and Move” was a British hit by the English Premiership team Liverpool FC back in the 90’s and while that team didn’t always practice what they sang, it did epitomize the foundation for fast, dynamic soccer, the ability to control the ball, pass and find space. The worlds best football teams are extremely competent in this area. Football teams like Barcelona and Manchester City are very strong possession (passing) based teams. As a training objective passing can be integrated into possession based exercises (rondos) as a more engaging activity for players. Also pattern play and more routine type technical passing based activities also have a place in our opinion. In pattern play the focus should be on unopposed technical execution and delivery. Soccer passing drills and pattern play typically should mirror the system of play and involve rotations where possible. Typically at the younger ages we focus on smaller rondos and quick passing patterns and coaching players on the many types of passes. To become a great passer of the football requires training and hours of practice. As we progress in the development program we start to include more complex possession based small sided games and positional games where players can execute their football passing skills in an opposed setting. Forcing the player to make quick decisions under pressure to maintain possession and still generate quality chances on goal with quality passes.
