Sample Technical Practices
These drills focus on developing the core skills of players. They can be performed opposed or un-opposed. e.g. Aerial Passing, Defensive heading, Finishing using Volleys.
Sample Functional Practices
These drills or practices are usually working on one or more skills in approximately a quarter of the pitch, e.g. defending crosses, finishing in and around the 18yrd area.
Sample Phases of Play Practices
Phases of Play are designed to create more game realistic practices. They require 2/3rds (sometime 1/2) of a standard size pitch and focus on team orientated movement to acheive a goal. One of the teams involved is usually over overloaded to begin the practice (e.g. 8 vs 7). Conditions can be placed on either the attacking or defending team in order to set up the teaching environment necessary.
Sample Small Sided Games (SSG's)
These practices generally involve two teams playing one of the following formats; 3vs3 up to 4vs4 (40x20yrds) for younger players. 6vs6 up to 9vs9 for advanced players in a 70x50yrds field. One team is coached on a specific coaching objective, e.g. compact defending. These games may also involve 'floater' players or support teams to acheive coaching objectives.
