Exercise Objectives
- Developing finishing technique.
- Develop placement and close range instep finishing technique.
- Develop 1vs1 finishing.
- Develop finishing from crosses.
Organisation
Diagram 1. Set-Up Arrangement
Set-Up
- Approx. 40x25 yrds with a full size goals as shown in Diagram 1. This should be increased for more advanced players.
- 2 lines (Line 1 and Line 2) with a collection of balls at each line.
- One player also starts at each yellow cone facing infield about 10 yrds up the field.
- 2 GKs positioned in each goal.
Instructions
- Lines go in sequence with specific player rotations. Both sides go at the same time and players join the end of the opposite sides line after taking a shot:
- First player from Line 1 (A1) passes into player A2.
- A1 then follows their pass to position themselves at the yellow cone for the next bout.
- A2 on receiving the ball A2 touches the ball infield (right foot) and takes one more touch (left foot) before shooting on goal (right foot).
- Following this shot A2 rotates around to the back of Line 2. A1 then takes A2's original position ready for the next pass. The opposite line performs the same sequence in the other direction. Play continues and every 5mins the coach progresses the exercise with one of the progressions shown below.
Scoring
- Line 1 and Line 2 can play against each other. First team to 10 goals.
Coaching Points
- Insist that the touches of the player touching infield are exactly as requested (i.e. first touch inside (right foot) and one additional touch prior to shooting (left foot), then shot (right foot).
- Receiver (A2) should be on their toes and their body should be open and facing infield.
- Quality weighted pass into the receiver.
- Positive first touch out the feet and towards the goal.
- Change of pace to accelerate past defenders following moves (Diagram 5).
- Discuss finishing technique where necessary.
- Quality finishing (Hit the target).
- Timing of the overlapping run (Diagram 2).
Progressions
Diagram 2. Set-Up Arrangement
- A2 finishes on goal.
- A1 passes into A2.
- A2 dribbles (drives) infield.
- A1 Overlaps with a positive curved run
- A2 passes infront of A1.
- A1 crosses the ball.
Diagram 3. Aerial Control (Throw-In)
- A1 throws (or chips with the feet) a ball into A2.
- A2 controls the ball infield (using aerial control, foot, thigh, head, etc)
- A1 replaces A2's starting position.
- A2 shoots on goal having brought the ball down and dribbled at goal.
Diagram 4. Through Ball Pass
- A1 plays a weighted through ball.
- A2 makes a well timed run to meet the through ball and take a touch and shoot (or shoot first time as requested by the coach).
- A1 replaces A2's starting position.
- A2 shoots on goal after taking a touch (or shoot first time as requested by the coach).
Diagram 5. 1vs1
- A1 passes into A2
- A2 touches the ball infield and proceeds to go 1vs1 with D1. D1 returns to their line after each bout. It can be useful to have 2 defenders, one waiting by the cone and one defending for each side.
- A1 replaces A2's starting position.
Variations
- A2 on receiving the ball A2 touches the ball infield (left foot) and takes one more touch (right foot) before shooting on goal (left foot).
- Require any particular foot sequence as desired by the coach.
- Perform from the right side of the field.
- Modify the position of the yellow cone. Move longer (Greater than 10yrds) (or infield) to create angles from different first touches.
- Reduce the distance between the defenders start cone to allow them to pressurize the attacker sooner.
- Defender can be passive (50%) or active (100%).
- The 1vs1 progression can be with a through ball passed between the defender and attacker (A2) to contest for.
- Finish with a 2vs2 game (players positioned by the posts of the goals). One player hits a diagonal pass across to the two waiting players before entering to play 2vs2 OR 4vs4 game with one or two teams waiting off the field. 2 minute games, restarts from the GK regardless of where the ball went out of play. A supply of balls should be at each goal post.
