Diagram 1. Set-Up Arrangement
Set-Up
- 44x33 yrds marked by cones and using the lines of the penalty area on the sides, with 1 full size goals as shown in Diagram 1.
- A2 starts amongst the defenders D1 and D2 (Red).
- A1 and A3 (Attackers) start behind the end line and then advance into the playing area following a sequence of passes.
- Blues (Attack) vs Reds (Defending).
- 1 GK.
Instructions
- After an initial starting sequence the players play 3vs2 (+GK) to goal. This sequence helps to create a starting position similar to real game situation (i.e. failed ariel clearance which goes straight to a forward).
- A1 passes into A2 (the forward).
- A2 passes the ball back to A1 (Midfielder)
- A1 then chips (clips) the ball in the air towards the two centre backs (D1,D2).
- One of the defenders (in the above diagram D2) steps and heads the ball clear, but back at A1 and A3.
- A3 collects the ball and dribbles into the area. A1 and A2 make intelligent runs to create space form themselves or A3 to dribble into. (Refer to Diagram 2)
- If the defenders get the ball they clear it over the end line. Rotate positions frequently.
Scoring
- 1 goal = Scoring on the full size goal normal. Each team attacks and defends for 5 mins.
Coaching Points
- Attacking principles on gaining possession. (i.e. Width, create space, etc).
- Quick transition depending on which team wins the ball.
- Quick play and passing to break down the opponent.
- Overlaps, 1-2's, take-overs
- Shoot when there is opportunity.
- Be sure to use the overload player.
- Immediately respond to rebounds.
- End product. Hit the target and get a good opportunity on goal.
- Defenders need good heading clearances.
- Defenders need to develop good defending principles.

Diagram 2. After Initial Sequence Play 3vs2.
Progressions
- None.
Variations
- Add another centre back and one more forward to create a 4vs3 overload.
- Add a time limit in which an attempt on goal must be made. (i.e. 10 secs).
- If the defenders win the ball and manage to pass to each other the attacking team does 10 push ups for lack of pressure on the ball.
