Diagram 1. Set-Up Arrangement
Set-Up
- Penalty Area with 1 full size goals as shown in Diagram 1.
- 2 cones set outside the 18 yrd box which act as start points for each line A and B.
- 1 cone centrally just inside the 18 yrd box where a supporting/lay-off player will be positioned.
- 2 cones positioned wide of the 6 yrd box corners.
- This exercise can be performed with a GK or coned corners of the goals (i.e. 3 yrds inside each post).
Instructions
- The first player in Line A (A1) passes into A2.
- A1 follows a lay-off from A2.
- A1 shoots on goal from distance with a driven shot. A1 then replaces A2.
- A2 then spins off and makes a checking run towards A3.
- A3 plays a short 1-2 with A2.
- A3 takes an angled shot on goal (generally aiming at the far corner of the goal). A2 replaces A3 who returns to one of the start lines.
- The exercise is then performed on the opposite side with player A4 being involved. Players should finish all rebounds.
Scoring
- 1 goal = Scoring on the full size goal normal.
Coaching Points
- Prepare players for a game by increasing core body temperature.
- Placement on the angled shot which is closer in and the shooter should be looking to find a corner (possibly with their instep).
- Immediately respond to rebounds.
- Shoulders and knee over the ball when striking.
- End product. Hit the target.
- Assessment of the goal keepers position prior to the shot.
Progressions
- One touch passing and finishing throughout the exercise.
Variations
- The layoff from A2 can be a scooped pass (or pick up and throw) for the oncoming player to volley or half volley.
- Enforce the rule of left foot striking only on one side and right only on the other.
