Session: AO.018 ![]()
Exercise Objectives
- To train the ability to keep possession of the ball and to identify proper angles of support and also timing of support.
- Develop passing and receiving techniques.
Organisation

Diagram 1. Set-Up Arrangement
Set-Up
- Using a 10x10 yrd grid, create as many grids as necessary for the players available.
Instructions
- The 3 attackers attempt to keep possession of the ball by passing amongst themselves. The attackers can only receive passes in the corners of the grid.
- The 1 defenders attempt to intercept the ball or force the attackers into misplacing passes outside the grid. The game continues until the defender has won possession of the ball 3 times.
- First pass is free (i.e. uncontested).
- This game can be conditioned to allow no diagonal passes also, if the defender is not creating the desired learning environment.
- A1 passes to A2.
- A3 notices that he cannot provide a supporting angle from his position and makes a run down the line to give an angle for A2 to pass the ball. A1 can remain in his/her position as he/she remains open.
Scoring
- Identify a specific number of consecutive passes the attacking team needs to complete before a point is scored (for example; 7).
Coaching Points
- Keep the ball speed high (pass the football quickly with limited touches).
- Players without the football must move within the grid to create good passing angles.
- Move to good angles as the football is in motion, not after the the passer has received the football.
- Players who pass the ball should move immediately afterwards to take up good positions to support.
- Ensure passes to fellow attackers are such that they can be controlled to their advantage (in front, good weight of pass, on ground, receiving open to the field).
- The football shouldn't have to be passed diagonally across the grid if the supporting angles are good and runs are made early.
- Encourage fake passes to help throw the defender off.
- Use non-verbal signals to indicate where you want the football.
Progressions
- 2 touch maximum by the attacking players.
- Allow the attacking players to move anywhere in the grid (i.e. regular 3vs1).
Variations
- Place 2 defenders in the middle holding a pinnie together (so they are joined).
- This makes the defender(s) bigger, but a little more slow as they need to communicate and work together. They cannot intercept the ball if they are not joined by the pinnie.
