Diagram 1. Set-Up Arrangement
Set-Up
- Using a 12x12yrd grid arrange 3 attackers and 2 defenders in the middle of the grid.
Instructions
- The 3 attackers attempt to keep possession of the ball by passing amongst themselves.
- The defenders attempt to intercept the ball or force the attackers into misplacing passes outside the grid. The game continues until the defenders have won possession of the ball dribbled to an outside line and put the sole of their show on it.
- First pass is free (i.e. uncontested).
- A1 passes to A2 on the run. With tight space in a 3vs2 this may often be an option.
- A3 notices that he cannot provide a supporting angle from his position and makes a run to support the play and receive the pass.
Scoring
- Identify a specific number of consecutive passes the attacking team needs to complete before a point is scored (for example; 7).
Coaching Points
- Keep the ball speed high (pass the ball quickly with limited touches).
- Players without the ball must move within the grid to create good passing angles.
- Move to good angles as the ball is in motion, not after the the passer has received the ball.
- Players who pass the football should move immediately afterwards to take up good positions to support.
- Ensure passes to fellow attackers are such that they can be controlled to their advantage (in front, good weight of pass, on ground, receiving open to the field).
- Encourage fake passes to help throw the defender off.
- Use non-verbal signals to indicate where you want the ball.
- First touch away from pressure.
- Availability for a pass needs to be early.
- Good communication is key now with less time and space on the ball.
Progressions
- 2 touch maximum by the attacking players.
- Allow the attacking players to move anywhere in the grid (i.e. regular 3vs1).
- Develop a players dribbling ability and control.
Variations
- Place 2 defenders in the middle holding a pinnie together (so they are joined). This makes the defender(s) bigger, but a little more slow as they need to communicate and work together. They cannot intercept the ball if they are not joined by the pinnie.
