Diagram 1. Set-Up Arrangement
Set-Up
- Using a 10x10yrd grid arrange 4 attackers and 1 defenders in the middle of the grid.
Instruction(s)
- The 4 attacker are conditioned to stay on their lines (between the 2 cones that make up their side of the grid). They can move up and down these lines, but cannot come inside the grid at any point.
- The attacking team attempts to make 10 consecutive passes (this can be adjusted to the ability level of the players).
- The defender changes with the an attacker if he intercepts the ball 3 times or the attacking players play the ball out the grid 4 times (or a combination of these).
- In the diagram above, A2 and A3 make good supporting runs to provide passing angles for A1. Providing the player on the football with 2 passing options. The check towards the football and open their hips to the inside of the playing area.
Scoring
- Identify a specific number of consecutive passes the attacking team needs to complete before a point is scored (for example; 10).
Coaching Points
- Keep the ball speed high (pass the ball quickly with limited touches).
- Players without the ball must move along the lines to create good passing angles.
- Move to good angles as the ball is in motion, not after the the passer has received the ball.
- Players who pass the ball should move immediately afterwards to take up good positions to support.
- Ensure passes to fellow attackers are such that they can be controlled to their advantage (in front, good weight of pass, on ground, receiving open to the field).
- Attempt to always give the player on the ball 2 passing channels (options).
Progressions
- 2 touch maximum by the attacking players.
Variations
- Start out by letting the players use their hands to pass the ball (basketball style). They may find this easier to start with and help you explain the concepts of possession to them.
