Exercise Objectives

Organisation

Diagram 1. Set-Up Arrangement
Set-Up
- Set-up a 30x30yrd grid, with a 10x10yrd square in the centre of the playing area. 2 teams with 6 players in each team in different coloured pinnies.
Instructions
- Two teams compete in the playing area and attempt to score by playing a pass on the ground through any 2 sides of the centre square.
- 6vs6, however, the team in possession has 6 players in the outer square to maintain possession of the football. The defending team drop 2 players into the centre square where they can attempt to block/intercept through footballs and attempts to pass through the centre square. Making it 6vs4 + (2 blockers).
- If the attacking team looses possession of the football the attackers become the defenders.
- When transitioning to defense the new defending team drops 2 players into the centre square.
- No attacking players are allowed in the centre square.
- If the football is intercepted by a defender in the centre square they simply dribble out of the centre area and pass to teammate in the larger square and the teams change roles (i.e. attacking and defending).
- A violation of any of these rules by a player results in their team becoming the defenders.
- Example from the Diagram above: A1 passes to A2 to maintain possession. A2 looks up and sees two possible passing options to score a point. In option 2, straight through the back of the square to A3. A2 can also score by passing the football diagonally through the side of the square to A4.
Scoring
- The attacking team plays passes through (across) any 2 sides of the centre square to earn a point.
Coaching Points
- Focus and Awareness to look up and see opportunities to pass through the centre square.
- Players have to use peripheral vision and field vision.
- Good quality passing to maintain possession unit opportunity to play a penetrating pass.
- Discuss long and short passing technique if necessary.
- Diagonal passes relate to game through balls.
- Look to play inside sometimes as you would in a game.
- Double points are easy if the attacking team doesn't transition 2 players into the centre square quickly.
- Transition quickly when an error is made.
- Other key coaching points of basic possession principles of play.
Progressions
- None.
Variations
- The attacking team scores a point by having a player check into the centre square, receive a pass and then successfully play it back out to another attacking player. To increase the difficulty the checking player can be asked to play the football out of the centre square using 1 touch. Refer to Diagram 2 below.
