Diagram 1. Set-Up Arrangement
Set-Up
- How to create space.(i.e. check away from where you want to receive, takes defenders eyes off you, push off the defender to get separation)
Instructions
- 2 teams compete to score by playing an aerial ball from their own half of the field into one of their targets (refer to scoring). In the example above the white team attempt to play the ball into their target players (F4,F5,F6). Both teams can use any of the target players to help keep possession of the ball:
- A1 plays the ball over the half way line into the oppositions half (satisfying the first condition to score).
- A2 plays a negative pass to A3 to satisfy another condition to score.
- A3 pressed from the defender uses one of the rear target players to keep possession.
- F1 then plays a pass unopposed to A4.
- A4 then satisfies the last condition to score and plays a long aerial pass into F6. The white team should continue to play and work the ball back and forward to attempt to hit one of the other targets (i.e. F4, F5) now they have captured F6.
- Encourage negative passes. Also known as ‘drops’ or ‘dump’ passes.
- Decision making – If the player cannot play forward, can they go sideways, or even backwards to maintain possession until they can go forward.
- Encourage good checking runs to create space.
- Fewer touches the better.
- Technique to delivering long aerial balls.
- Head up to see open targets.
Scoring
- 2 teams compete and attempt play an aerial pass into their targets AFTER playing the ball into the oppositions half and back into theirs. When they complete this sequence they eliminate that target and have to play an aerial pass into the 2 remaining targets. When all 3 target players have received an aerial pass controlled in their assigned area from a team the game is complete.
